Lokalnews.de macht nach nicht einmal 12 Monaten dicht. Einen niedrigen bis mittleren 6-stelligen Betrag hat der Test gekostet. Eine Aussage hat mir besonders zu denken gegeben:
Es fehlen nur noch tragfähige Konzepte um aus Visits Umsätze generieren zu können
Das ist einer der festgefahrensten Denkfehler, dem eine komplette Branche hinterherjagd:
Visits = Reichweite = Umsatz.
Reichweite ist für sich gesehen kaum etwas wert. Jeder Pizzabote hat im lokalen Umfeld schnell mehr Reichweite als die Lokalzeitung. In jeden Briefkasten wirft er seine Menüzettel. Meistens auch da, wo “keine Werbung” Aufkleber sind. Seine Reichweite ist enorm. Seine Relevanz tendiert dagegen gen Null.
Es geht um die Relevanz
Der viel entscheidendere Punkt ist die Relevanz. Wer es schafft in seinem Umfeld Relevanz zu erreichen, ist wertvoll. Relevanz und Reichweite können dabei zusammenhängen. Müssen es aber nicht.
Bestes Beispiel sind die Anzeigenblätter. Ihre Reichweite ist meist deutlich höher als die der Lokalzeitung. Bei der Relevanz ist es genau umgekehrt. Was in Anzeigenblättern steht interessiert oft keine Sau (darum schaut sich das online auch keiner aktiv an). Was in der Lokalzeitung steht, bestimmt dagegen die Themen und Debatten vor Ort. Diese Relevanz ist Geld wert.
Einige Lokalzeitungen spielen gerade ein gefährliches Spiel: Sie versuchen die Reichweite der Printprodukte zu sichern, indem sie ihre Relevanz dafür auf’s Spiel setzen. Der berühmte Twitter-Hinweis auf den hochkarätigen Artikel in der Printausgabe von morgen ist das beste Beispiel. Relevanz geht verloren, indem man die Inhalte ganz bewusst einer breiten Gruppe vorenthält. (Ob man damit Print-Reichweite erzeugt, sei mal dahin gestellt)
Durch neue Onlinemedien entstehen dagegen Medien im lokalen Umfeld, die den Platzhirschen die Relevanz Stück für Stück abnehmen. Das gelingt ihnen meist durch einen anderen Fokus auf das lokale Geschehen und nicht zwangsläufig durch umfassendere Berichterstattung.
Wie sich Relevanz verschiebt, zeigt ein Beispiel beim Lokalblog Tegernseer Stimme:
Der Artikel ist eine sehr kurze Zusammenfassung eines Artikels der Tegernseer Zeitung, der Lokalzeitung vor Ort. Es ging um den Vorschlag einer Hochschule für das Tegernseer Tal. Vorgeschlagen vom Geschäftsführer der Standort-Marketing-Gesellschaft. Verlinkt wurde von der Tegernseer Stimme auf den ausführlichen Artikel bei der Lokalzeitung.
Was dann passiert, ist das eigentlich Spannende. Die Leser der Tegernseer Stimme gehen zur Konkurrenz, lesen dort den Artikel und kommen wieder zurück, um den Artikel inhaltlich zu diskutieren. Einschließlich des Geschäftsführers der Standort-Marketing-Gesellschaft, der eine Falschdarstellung im Ursprungsartikel der Zeitung klarstellen will – das tut er ganz intuitiv dort, wo er die Leser vermutet. Unter dem Artikel des Lokalblogs.
Das Beispiel ist klein und nicht repräsentativ. Trotzdem zeigt es, wie sich Relevanz verschieben kann. Vom Platzhirsch zum Außenseiter. Von Print zu Online. Am Anfang betrifft es die Leser, die zum Diskutieren das relevantere Medium wählen. Irgendwann betrifft es die Politik, die sich die Informationen (und Stimmungen) aus dem relevanteren Medium holt. (auch der Standort-Marketing-Mann ist Politik)
Am Ende betrifft es die Werbekunden, die dort werben, wo sie das Gefühl haben, dass dort die Menschen sind. Alle wenden sich zur Relevanz. Die Auflage (Reichweite) der gedruckten und etablierten Lokalzeitung verändert sich dadurch erstmal nicht zwangsläufig – aber ihre Relevanz wird auf Dauer immer geringer.
Durch dieses Beispiel wird auch klar, warum die Denkweise am Anfang des Artikels nicht zeitgemäß erscheint und vor allem aus der Denkweise eines printgetriebenen Verlags entspringt: Viel Geld wird in ein Projekt investiert, um innerhalb eines Jahres eine möglichst große Reichweite aufzubauen. Reichweite = Umsatz. Klappt das nicht, wird nach einem Jahr der Geldhahn zugedreht.
Was man damit nicht versucht hat, ist es Relevanz aufzubauen. Relevanz braucht Zeit und Vertrauen und einen klaren Fokus. Geld kann dabei helfen mehr Zeit zu haben. Relevanz kann sich davon keiner kaufen. Und hier liegt auch die Chance.
