Am letzten Wochenende habe ich mit Peter Posztos von der Tegernseer Stimme über Online-Lokaljournalimus und die Zukunft nachgedacht. Herausgekommen ist eine spannende Selbstkritik, die das Thema von einer etwas anderen Seite betrachtet. Nicht nur aus Sicht des Geschäftsmodells (der Originalartikel läuft auf [x Politics] – ein Politblog, den ich gemeinsam mit Jochen Krisch von excitingcommerce.de betreibe):
Wir berichten nunmehr seit knapp zwei Jahren online über das Tegernseer Tal. Doch das Angebot der Tegernseer Stimme gibt es in ähnlicher Form auch in anderen Gebieten Deutschlands. Lokale Onlinemedien, die unabhängigen Journalismus bieten wollen.
Dabei stellen wir uns in letzter Zeit die Frage, wie man sich diese Form von Unabhängigkeit bewahren kann? Und zwar ohne in die Falle aus Verquickungen und Abhängigkeiten zu treten.
Unabhängigkeit ist ein schweres Geschäft. Dabei ist sie wichtig für eine funktionierende Demokratie – auch und gerade im lokalen Umfeld. Doch wie groß ist die Chance, dass “junge Medien” auch über einen längeren Zeitraum gesehen anders in ihrem lokalen Umfeld agieren können, als das tief verwurzelte verlagsgetriebene Zeitungen bisher getan haben?
Tiefe Verwurzelung endet irgendwann im Tunnelblick
Junge und unabhängige Onlinemedien erlauben sich dagegen einen neuen Blickwinkel auf bestehende Themen. Durch unbedarftes Hinterfragen stoßen Netzmedien oft selbst Themen an. Ein schönes Beispiel ist in diesem Zusammenhang die Geschichte zu “Tierquälerei aus Försterhand ist eine Schand’ fürs Bayernland“. In der traditionellen Zeitung wurde die Berichterstattung ausgeklammert. Dass das Thema trotzdem viele beschäftigt, beweisen dagegen über 120 Kommentare innerhalb weniger Tage.
Dabei erscheint das ganze auf den ersten Blick recht klein. Kleine Demo, keine Politiker, die sich mit der Sache solidarisieren oder für Bilder zur Verfügung stehen. Auch der Kreuther Bürgermeister Josef Bierschneider will dazu eigentlich nichts sagen. Vor Ort ist er ebenfalls nicht – Termindruck.
Trotz allem stößt das Thema auf großes Interesse, und das weit über den Landkreis hinaus. Die Kommentare zum Artikel kommen aus dem ganzen Bundesgebiet. Man könnte also sagen ein Aufreger. Einer, der den “Wichtigen” aber scheinbar nicht so Recht ins Konzept passen will.
Umso mehr stellt sich im Nachgang die Frage, warum die alteingesessene Zeitung, immer noch der Meinungsmacher schlechthin im Landkreis, sowohl die Demonstration, wie auch die Berichterstattung über das kritische Thema fast vollständig ignoriert?
Können Medien über Jahrzehnte unabhängig bleiben?
Ist also die jahrzehntelange Zusammenarbeit zwischen lokalen Größen aus Wirtschaft und Vereinen, Politikern, Bürgermeistern und (Chef)redakteuren nicht automatisch durchzogen von persönlichen Interessen, Gefallen und Gegengefallen?
Hat man als Journalist – rein menschlich gesehen – nach zehn Jahren überhaupt noch die Motivation und den Antrieb wirklich alles und jeden in seinem Umfeld journalistisch zu hinterfragen? Wird harte und berechtigte Kritik durch jahrelange Freundschaften nicht ganz automatisch abgeschwächt? Ist die strukturelle Verwobenheit nicht so allumfassend, dass man sich eigentlich eingestehen müsste, schon lange nur noch Unabhängig berichten zu können, bis der Verleger anruft?
Und wenn wir schon dabei sind und die Annahmen stimmen: Wäre es nicht viel logischer, wenn lokale Medien eine viel geringere Halbwertszeit haben? Sagen wir mal – rein hypothetisch – jede Redaktion bliebe nur fünf Jahre im Amt. Ähnlich, der Legislaturperioden. Danach kommen die nächsten. Unvoreingenommen, kritisch, hinterfragend. Dann wäre ein lokales Medium, ob Zeitung oder Zeitung ein wichtiges Korrektiv in der Kommunalpolitik.
Neue Menschen stellen neue Fragen. Die Antworten auf die Fragen und das eigene Handeln müsste immer wieder neu überdacht werden. Sicher, der Ansatz hat einige Schwächen. Aber das haben jahrzentelange Hofberichterstattung getrieben von wirtschaftlichen Interessen und Freundschaftsdiensten auch.
Was lange währt, wird selten gut!
Gerade in lokalen Gebieten können Medien nicht über Jahrzehnte unabhängig sein. Zumindest ist das extrem schwierig, wenn nicht gar unmöglich. Zu klein ist das Netzwerk aus Politik, Wirtschaft und Journalismus. Zu eng werden die Kontakte zu denen, die man eigentlich jeden Tag aufs neue kritisch hinterfragen muss. Zu faul wird der jeweilige Redakteur, der die meisten Antworten schon lange zu kennen glaubt und manchen Geschichten darum nicht mehr unvoreingenommen hinterher geht. Das ist noch nicht einmal Versagen. Es ist einfach nur menschlich und steckt in der Natur der Sache.
Das Internet bietet uns in der Hinsicht eine große Chance: Die Einstiegshürden in den Journalismus sind gefallen. Wer mit der lokalen Berichterstattung unzufrieden ist, kann sich selbst ans Werk machen. Eine Seite, vielleicht im Rahmen eines Netzwerks, zwischen 10 und 50 Euro Kosten pro Monat und fertig ist die lokale (Netz)Zeitung.
Abgestimmt wird am Ende von den Lesern: Wer den besseren Job macht, hat mehr Leser. Wer die Leser und die lokale Aufmerksamkeit hat, bekommt die Chance auf ein Auskommen, das zum Leben reicht.
Medien sind Teil der Demokratie und deren Basis
Wenn man Medien und die darüber stattfindenen Meinungsäußerungen als wichtigen Teil der Demokratie versteht, muss man auch die Menschen in den Redaktionen als Teil der Demokratie verstehen. Jeder Einzelne sollte also den lokalen Medien mindestens genauso auf die Finger schauen, wie die Medien den Politikern auf die Finger schauen sollten. Die Möglichkeiten dazu sind größer und mächtiger, als sie es jemals waren: Kommentare, Liveberichte, Like-Buttons, Vernetzung der Leser und und und…
Demokratie lebt davon, dass ständig neue Themen und Denkanstöße geprüft, bewertet und diskutiert werden. Mit neuen Themen und Anregungen kann der Politik auf die Sprünge geholfen werden. Zumindest solange die jeweiligen Medien den Biss und den Horizont dazu haben. Falls einer Redaktion irgendwann der Elan ausgeht, wird es Zeit für eine neue Konkurrenz. Ob online oder print ist dabei zweitrangig.
So kann die Debatte um gesellschaftliche Erneuerung dauerhaft am Leben gehalten werden. Konkurrenz belebt bekanntlich das Geschäft. Das gilt nicht nur für die Wirtschaft, sondern auch für Politik und die Diskussionen darüber.
